Cowboys, Indians, and Gunfighters: The Story of the Cattle Kingdom/Illustrated in Full Color and Black and White With Prints, Paintings, Photographs
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (April, 1993)
Author: Albert Marrin
Average review score:

The best book I've read this year-
This is the best book I've read this year. It talks about the exciting days of the Old West when cowboys rounded up cows and horses, when outlaws roamed the range, and when Indians hunted buffalo. The conflicts come between the cowboys and the Indians about the hunting of the buffalo (almost to extinction), which brings starvation to the Indian. The gunfighter still lives in the chapters about such famous ones as Bat Masterson, Doc Holliday, Virgil and Morgan Earp, and the best gunfighter of all time, Wyatt Earp.

If you're a fan of the old west, you will probably enjoy this book.

Craft Manual of North American Indian Footwear
Published in Paperback by White Pub (December, 1992)
Author: White George M.
Average review score:

The Best Moccasin Making Manual
This handy book is the most comprehensive collection of Native American moccasin patterns and instructions around. The directions and diagrams are easy to follow and the results are great! (I've made several of the 28 designs already, including a side-seam type, a slipper and a high top.) And the author shows you how to customize the patterns to fit your foot using simple tools like a string, pencil, scissors and a paper bag.

The designs are authentic, spanning the styles of many western tribes. Why buy individual patterns for lots of money each when you can get a nice collection for so little?

The company also puts out an easy to follow video showing how to make several of the patterns in the book, if you want to see the process in action.

This is a great book. I keep reading it over and over. A great addition to a short story collection. Shocking endings are at the end of every story.

Creative Black & White Photography
Published in Hardcover by David & Charles Publishers (January, 2002)
Author: Les McLean
Average review score:

Creative Black and White Photography
Les McLean has produced a wonderful book to inspire darkroom and lightroom black and white printers of every ability. He is a great photographer and master printer who is happy to share the secrets of his trade with the rest of us.

McLean is an ex Geordie miner and rock and roll player who has spent 30 years honing his skill becoming one of the foremost black and white printers. He learnt his art by his own trial and error. He now teaches in England and the United States and has, at last, been persuaded to write his first book. He debunks many of the esoteric theories and concentrates instead on the essential practical techniques needed to make expressive prints.

This book was revelatory. Its central theme is to learn to adapt our seeing by pre-visualising how our photographic tools see and record what we chose to photograph. He first demonstrates how to produce an expressive negative and then leads us to techniques to turn it into a fine print.

Although most of the book deals with traditional methods, Les recognises that the two techniques can work together to take our image making into new directions. He shows how simple it is to use and configure Photoshop to produce digital negatives and apply darkroom techniques to produce sensational images.

This is certainly the best black and white book I have read. It has blown away the cobwebs, witchcraft and confusion of other manuals. I eagerly await his next book.

Creative Black and White Photography: Advance Camera and Darkroom Techniques, Revised Edition
Published in Unknown Binding by Allworth Pr (E) (March, 2003)
Author: Bernhard J. Suess
Average review score:

An excellent reference
With a clarity of presentation and personal anecdotes, Bernhard Suess masterfully presents techniques and information quite useful to both amateur and skilled photographers. There was a wealth of information presented in this book which significantly improved both my compositional and printing skills. Amidst a plethora of books available on the subject, I feel that Suess makes an exceptional effort to make the topic as accessible as possible. There is a minimum of technical jargon that is not explained, which should appeal to the neophyte, and there are several tricks and techniques that would appeal to the more experienced photographer. I highly recommend this book.

The Creative Monochrome Image: How to Excel at Black & White Photography
Published in Hardcover by Cassell Academic (March, 1996)
Author: David Chamberlain
Average review score:

Outstanding
This is probably the best book I've ever read on creative B&W photography. It covers, in depth, various creative techniques for making prints that catch both the viewer's eye and interest. Most of the prints shown are not striaght prints but are highly manipulated in the darkroom. Excellent how to's and technical discussion.

Creatures of the Dreamseed (Engel)
Published in Paperback by White Wolf Publishing Inc. (March, 2003)
Authors: Feder, White Wolf Staff, Oliver Graute, Kai Meyer, and Oliver Hoffmann
Average review score:

Beautiful Book
This book is an account about Creatures made of Dreams and Nightmares. It follows through the writings of a strong-willed man whose sanity is tested and troubled by the creatures he encounters. As with all Engel works, it is a book of history, and the accounts are poetic in form and mythical in measure. The text flows from one horror to the next with both an accurate and beautific description that not only describes the specifics of these creatures of darkness, but also conveys their mystery and dark glory. A suggested read for anyone who enjoys both biblical legends and futuristic horror. Engel in all is an unparalleled work of storytelling.

Crimes of the Middle Classes: White-Collar Offenders in the Federal Courts
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (July, 1900)
Authors: David Weisbund, Stanton Wheeler, Elin Waring, Nancy Bode, and David Weisburd
Average review score:

A Review of Crimes of the Middle Class
This book is an excellent resource for all individuals who are affilitated with law enforcement and or the Criminal Justice System. It allows for an indepth view and explanation of white collar crimes and their diverse nature. This collaborative project gave and excellent look at the criminal justice process from start to finish regarding the conviction and actual sentencing of these offenders. One of the most important aspects of this literary work is the fact that it actually attempts to profile the average white collar criminal. Overall, I feel that this book should act as a benchmark for those white collar crime scholars who want to further expand the general understanding of who these white collar criminals are and how they make their living through scams.

Crisis in Black and White
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (March, 1966)
Author: Charles E. Silberman
Average review score:

Analysis of race relations, with proposed solutions
If you want to learn about race relations and you do not have a lot of time, READ THIS BOOK! It is one of the best short books on race relations. Unfortunately, no book as sweeping in scope, scholarly, concise, readable and fair as this one has been published in the last 30 years. It traces race relations from slavery to emancipation to Reconstruction to Jim Crow to the migration of African-Americans to the Northern cities. The author predicts an explosion of racial violence, which in fact did happen after this book was written, in the 1960s. He offers a solution: community organizing in the style of the labor organizer Saul Alinsky, plus pre-kindergarten education for black children. (Alinsky wrote the book "Rules for Radicals.") Malcolm X, Ralph Abernathy (Martin Luther King Jr.'s close associate), and Jerome Bruner (famous Harvard psychologist) all had high praise for the book. It is 30 years old, but 80% of the information is still relevant, and 95% is relevant if you are interested in the history of race relations.
